The European Union might “act quickly and firmly” in response to what it deems “unwarranted” visa bans imposed by the United States against five European individuals involved in fighting digital hatred and misinformation, an EU official has said.
European Leaders Condemn US Action as ‘Coercion’
European leaders including Emmanuel Macron charged the US administration of “bullying and threats”, following the visa restrictions targeted individuals who have been central to efforts to introduce legislation governing US-based technology firms.
“For too long, ideologues in Europe have spearheaded coordinated campaigns to coerce US companies to punish US perspectives they disagree with,” stated the US secretary of state online. “This government will no longer tolerate these egregious acts of censorship beyond its borders.”
Widespread Condemnation Across Europe
Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials supported the French president in criticizing the decision.
The bans were enacted on Tuesday against a former EU commissioner involved in crafting the EU’s Digital Services Act (DSA), as well as several anti-disinformation campaigners, including two in Germany and two in the UK.
An Escalating Conflict Regarding Governance
The DSA is viewed by Washington as a type of speech restriction, whereas EU authorities argue the rules are necessary to combat hate speech and falsehoods.
This row risks becoming a facet of a far wider existing political and ideological clash involving the current US administration and European institutions.
